To use the new Wordpress 2.3 tags system with ecto, so you can set tags using the ecto side panel, the ecto configuration has to be changed from the default. The instructions are found in the ecto support forum (these instructions apply only to ecto3 – I don’t know how to do it for ecto2, [...]

YouTube – Evolution IS a Blind Watchmaker – A very interesting video about the theory of evolution using clocks as examples (attacking the creationist argument that “a bunch of parts will never randomly assemble into the correct arrangement to form a properly functioning complex”). How to define a new wallet item in 1Password
December 17th, 2007 · 11 Comments
Update 1: I have modified the perl script to include Damon’s modification (see the comments) to make it work properly with the UTF-encoded Localizable.strings file used in recent 1Password versions.
Update 2: Somewhere around version 2.8.3 of 1Password there were some changes that make the original script not work anymore. I have updated the instructions and [...]

How to lock the screen using a keystroke on Mac OS X
December 12th, 2007 · No Comments
It seems surprisingly difficult to map a keystroke to lock the screen in OSX – you can map a hot-corner to it, but if you prefer to use the keyboard, there is no official way to do it.
If you use QuickSilver (and why wouldn’t you?), you can set up a trigger (see also this tutorial) [...]

Controlling notifications in iCal
December 11th, 2007 · No Comments
One of the very annoying things in iCal (both in MacOSX 10.4 and 10.5) is that accept/decline notifications for meeting invitations are always sent to the sender of the invitation. This can be very annoying in some cases (for example, when a company-wide invitation for a talk is sent, the sender does not really care [...]

Service Scrubber, Safari and keychains
December 6th, 2007 · 1 Comment
I love Service Scrubber, which allows me to clean up the Services menu so that it’s actually useful. But I discovered that it does not interact well with the new code signing feature in Leopard, because it modifies Safari’s Info.plist file to disable services. Once this happens, the system will refuse Safari access to keychains [...]

Updated to Wordpress 2.3.1
December 2nd, 2007 · No Comments
I have upgraded this blog to Wordpress 2.3.1. Everything went fine! I have converted all my categories to tags, you should see a tag cloud where the categories list used to be. I manually added support for displaying tags to the theme I’m using, and modified it to correctly display the “Linky” entries based on [...]
