Bwaha! I finally sat down and tracked the problem with the extra white space. It turned out to actually be a bug in the very nice Coppermine integration plugin I use, but which had been fixed in the latest version. It was inserting a spurious “clear: both” that was causing the problem.
I’m very happy to have moved the server to Gentoo. It’s such a pleasure to maintain and use.
