Today is Switzerland’s national day, so we all got the day free, and there’s been sound of fireworks all day long. In a little bit we’ll be heading down to the lake to watch the official fireworks display!
I was surprised to learn (at the page linked above) that only since 1993 is this day a non-working holiday. Wow. In Mexico, I think Independence Day (September 16th, and not May 5th like many americans seem to think) was probably a holiday the year after it occurred 
Update: soon after I posted this, a huge storm started! In typical Swiss fashion, the weather had its own plans. I’m sure the fireworks will still take place, but I’m not sure I’ll want to walk down to the lake under the torrential rain…
