Productivity tip: cut lunch short and reward yourself with leftover “personal time”

March 5th, 2008 · No Comments

I have the habit of taking some “personal time” every day after lunch, to check news, web comics, check my personal email, etc. Recently I had started to try to limit that time to 15-20 minutes at most (unchecked, it could stretch way into the afternoon).

I take
as
personal time
whatever is left
of my
lunch hour
My new technique is to take as PT whatever is left of my lunch hour when I get back to my office. If I have a quick lunch, I could have a full 45-minute stretch, or if I prefer to stay longer to talk to people during lunch, I would have to content myself with little or no time. Normally I get about 15 minutes, which is about the same I was doing before.

I think it is a nice way to encourage myself to be responsible with my time (I can’t have a long leisurely lunch and a lot of free time afterward), and gives me an incentive to get back soon so I can work on interesting personal things. As an example, I am writing this during my PT, which was a full 35-minute slot today!
